Kim grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio. At the age of 7,
enjoying the local 4th of July celebration, she was
given 10 tickets to explore the rides, she found the
pony ride and rode every one of them. Falling in love
with a black pony mare, she negotiated a price and began
driving her mother crazy. That pony didn't make it home
with her, but riding lessons began and soon a
show pony was purchased.
The Midwest's answer to pony club is 4-H. With much
success in 4-H and the local shows, Kim was invited to
join a rated show stable run by Chilli Rodgers. A
successful year in the pony ring led to the hunter ring,
then to an
equitation horse, and then on to the jumper ring. Relocating
as an older teen to the west coast of Florida, Kim
trained with and taught lessons for Laurie Dickerson. As
an apprentice she had many
opportunities to clinic and ride with some of the
country's best coaches including Col.
Kimball and Rodger Wilhelm (dressage), and George Morris, Rodney Jenkins, Victor Hugo-Vidal, Anne Kursinski, Ronnie Mutch, Buddy Brown and Steve Stephens
(hunters, jumpers and equitation).
In 1980 she moved to Colorado and began Canterbury Farm with
Canadian rider Joanne Waring - still a successful "A" circuit stable. 1988 took Kim
and her husband to Dallas, Texas where Kim worked as assistant to Alana Featherstone
- Canadian Olympic grand
prix rider. Willow Bend Polo and Hunt club was a 200+
horse facility, and Kim was in charge of the "B" and "C"
rated show string (over 70 horses and ponies) as well as
helping Alana develop young grand prix horses. In 1991,
another promotion for her husband, and after the birth
of her first child Alex, Northern California was home.
Gry and Duncan McFarland's Windfall Farm was a wonderful part
time job that allowed her to "stay horsey" while
settling into being a mom. Helping to care for the
horses and clients that stayed home while Windfall Farm was
on their 26 week per year show schedule was a lot of
fun. Soon staying "at home" wasn't enough
for Kim, so she started Magnolia
Ridge, now a successful "A and B" show stable.
The birth of her daughter filled out the year. And then
another promotion for husband Matthew brought the family
home to Seattle.
The
past 17 years have been filled with raising a family and
the realization of a long term goal, to create a
positive, family environment where adults and children
can share their passion of, caring for, riding, showing
and winning with these fabulous animals we are so
privileged to have in our care!
